Homework Policy
All teachers will assign homework to their students. Homework is assigned Monday through Thursday and may include Friday. As a child gets older, there are also longer assignments, which may take a week, or more and which may also include weekends. Parents are asked to encourage children to do their own work, to complete the assignment carefully and neatly, to care for their books and materials, and to return their work daily or by the due date. Suggested Schedule
Kindergarten 15 - 20 minutes per day
Grades 1 - 2 30 - 35 minutes per day
Grades 3 - 4 35 - 45 minutes per day
Grade 5 50 - 60 minutes per day
If a student is absent, homework may be picked up at school after the second day of absence. Please call first so that the teacher has time to prepare and send the homework to the office. If questions arise associated with homework, please call the school office, leave a message, and the teacher will return your call.
Standards-Based Promotion Policy
On November 10, 1998 the Los Angeles City Board of Education enacted a new standards-based promotion policy. Your child’s promotion to 3rd, 4th, 5th, or 6th grade/middle school will be affected by this policy. Promotion will be based upon a combination of the following criteria:
A minimum score on the reading, language arts and mathematics sections of STAR test given in spring, combined with your child’s course grades in reading, language arts, English Language Development (for students who are limited-English-proficient), mathematics and their performance on new District-wide performance-based assessments.
Release of Students
It is imperative that children do not leave the school grounds during school hours, including the lunch period. There are provisions for students that go home for lunch and parents picking up their children early. If a student is to go home for lunch regularly, a Lunch PermitApplication is available from the office. When picking up your child early, you must come to the office and sign a blue “Release of Child during School Hours form. Please note that children may only be released to an adult whose name appears on the emergency card.
Dress Code/School Uniforms
Dress age appropriate with clothing suitable for playing and in good taste. No distracting clothing such as tank tops, muscle shirts, crop tops, short-shorts, spandex clothing, clothing advertising drugs/alcohol, clothing with inappropriate slogans or profanity, or any clothing determined to be gang affiliated will be allowed at school. Refrain from wearing hats and caps while indoors. For safety reasons, do not wear sandals, clogs or dangling earrings to school.
Immunizations
New students will not be enrolled unless a written immunization record provided by a physician or the health department is presented at the time of enrollment and immunizations are up-to-date. There is now a requirement for Haemophilus influenza type b (HIB) immunization for new enrollees age 2 months to 4 years and 6 months.
Students who require additional vaccine doses or who lack a written record are no longer allowed a grace period. All students new to the District or transfer students within the district must show that they have received all currently required immunizations in order to be enrolled.
The immunization status of all students will be reviewed periodically. Those students who do not meet the state guidelines must be excluded from school until the requirements are met. Students who have been exposed to a communicable disease for which they have not been immunized must be excluded from school at the discretion of the Health Department.
Tuberculosis Clearance
All new kindergarten students and all new first grade students who have never attend kindergarten must present a written report provided by the private physician or health department, giving the results of a Mantoux test for tuberculosis done within one year prior to school entry.
All other new students entering grades 1 - 6 who have never previously attended any school in California must present documentation of the results of a Mantoux test done at some previous time. Students entering at any grade level from any other California school (public, private, or parochial) are exempt from the requirement.
Medications at School
A student who needs to take medication during school hours must have a statement to this effect on file at the school, signed by the prescribing physician and the parent/guardian. The required forms are available from the school nurse or administrator. School health personnel do not prescribe or give advice regarding medication or other care beyond first aid.
Physical Examinations
A Child Health and Disability Prevention (CHDP) examination is required for all first grade students 18 months prior to or up to 3 months after admission to the first grade. This examination may be done by a private physician, by a health department clinic, or in some instances by the District CHDP staff. A blood test to determine lead level is part of this examination. If help is needed in meeting the requirement for a CHDP examination, please contact the school nurse.
Physical examination as required for Special Education programs may be done by licensed physicians. If parents/guardians do not wish to have their child examined at school, they must file an annual written statement to that effect with the administrator.
Screening of vision and hearing will be done on first admission to school, and thereafter in accordance with state mandates. Parents/guardians will be notified of any conditions requiring further attention.
Student Accident Insurance
Each year many children have accidents on the school grounds or on the way to/from school. Our school does not provide medical insurance coverage for school accidents. This means that you must pay for your child’s medical bills if he/she gets hurt during school activities. You are urged to read carefully the brochure sent home with your child regarding low-cost students accident and health insurance provided by Myer-Stevens, 1-800-827-4695. Many coverage options are available.
Visitations, Parent Conferences and Report Cards
Classroom Visitations
You are encouraged to visit the school, meet your child’s teacher, and become acquainted with the school program. Periodic twenty-minute visits are recommended. We ask your cooperation in the following:
Classroom visitations are permitted by appointment on Thursdays between the hours of 8:45 and Noon.
Obtain a Visitor’s Permit at the office.
Enter and leave the classroom as quietly as possible.
Do not converse with the teacher during the class time.
Children may not visit classrooms.
If you wish to confer with the teacher, please arrange for a conference before or after school.
Parent Conferences
Conferences are an important part of the learning process. We have two formal conference periods during the school year. The first week of December will be the first formal conference and the week of March the second. If you have an appointment and can not keep it, we would appreciate you letting the teacher know by also calling the office. Informal conferences may be scheduled with your child's teacher anytime during the school year. You will need to set up an appointment with the teacher rather than just "dropping in”, since teachers have before/after school responsibilities.
Report Cards
We have three formal reporting periods. Report cards will be sent home after the two formal conferences and the last day of school.
