kindergarten

There are two sessions of Kindergarten, one in the morning and the afternoon.   When the child is not in his or her kindergarten session, he has the option of attending KED (see below).  Here is the schedule:

AM Kindergarten ................................. 8:00 -- 11:20 AM
PM Kindergarten ................................ 11:20 --   2:40 PM
KED .................................................... 8:00 --   2:40 PM

Kindergarten Extended Day Program (KED)
Roscomare Road School offers a fee based extended kindergarten program for all kindergarten students.  Parents must fill out an enrollment form located in the office.  The program costs $630 per session (Fall and Spring) and must be paid in full at the beginning of each session. Hours of the KED program are from 8:00 a.m. until 2:39 p.m.  KED personnel supervise kindergarten lunch periods.  (see Kindergarden)

What can I expect on the first day of school?
The first day of school is the Tuesday after Labor Day.  There are two times kindergarten is taught:

Morning Kindergarten 8:00 am- 11:20 am,
Afternoon Kindergarten 11:20 am - 2:40.

All student Teacher/Room assignments are posted in front of the school on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend at 8:00 am and will remain there throughout the Labor Day weekend.

Room assignments for the first day are not permanent.  There is a chance that some switching during the first couple of weeks may be needed to balance out classes based on teacher’s assessment of the mix of students in each class.

What about the time that my child is not in Kindergaten between 8:00 am and 2:40pm?
Kindergarten Extended Day (K.E.D.) program is a service provided by the Booster Club (Roscomare’s Fundraising Engine) and begins on the first day of school.  Please note that you will have to pay for the semester in full before your child’ first day at K.E.D.    No pro-ratio or refunds will be given.  If you have questions about K.E.D., please contact Michelle Case, K.E.D. Director. 310.472.2489

What about parking?  Will I need to walk my child into school each day?
Parking can be chaotic and overwhelming –especially during the first few weeks of school. Please be patient and allow plenty of time to get to school before the start of the class.   Also, be respectful of the neighbors on Roscomare Road .  Please observe all of the rules of the road: Don’t park in driveways, double park, or park in the red curb areas.  It may be tempting to just stop and “run” into school, but when you park illegally, it disrupts traffic for many other people.  Keep in mind that things will calm down as the school year progresses.

Kindergarten parents have an option to park on the street or on the playground in the morning between 7:45 am and 8:10 am . An adult or older sibling accompanies most kindergarten children into the Kindergarten yard.  For those children who are participating in K.E.D., there will be a sign-in book that is on a table in the yard.  A responsible person must sign the K.E.D. book each day.  This is also where “hot lunch” money is put for those children getting lunch from the cafeteria.

What time-frame can I drop my child off at school?
Morning Kindergarten teachers open their doors at 8:00 a.m.  The Kindergarten gates typically open at 7:45 am with supervision provided.  If your child is in afternoon Kindergarten and attending K.E.D., then he/she will meet the K.E.D. teachers in the Kindergarten yard until about 8:15 a.m.   After that, K.E.D. is in Room 16.  The morning K.E.D kids eat lunch with K.E.D. and then are escorted to their Kindergarten classrooms.  The afternoon K.E.D. children eat lunch together after morning Kindergarten has ended.  The K.E.D. teachers supervise the children at lunch, not the kindergarten teachers.  Parents/carpool pickup afternoon K.E.D students in Room 16 and must sign the children out.  The upper grades end school at 2:39 p.m. so you might want to consider picking up your afternoon K.E.D child a bit earlier to avoid the traffic from the rest of the school.  (On 26 Tuesdays during the year, 1st – 5th   Graders get out   at 1:39 pm to give teachers time for professional development).

What should my kindergarten child bring to school each day?
What about lunch?

Kindergarten children should bring a sturdy backpack for their homework and for notices sent home from the school. Children who are attending K.E.D. need to bring a lunch each day.  Children may also purchase a hot lunch from the cafeteria for $1.00.  If your child forgets his/her lunch or lunch money, there is a fund in the office from which the child can borrow money – the K.E.D teachers will help children who need these funds.  This fund needs to be repaid.  Menus for hot lunch will be sent home each month.  When preparing your child’s lunch, please keep in mind that there will be no refrigeration available.  Also remember that your child will need to be able to open all containers, so pack accordingly.

When will my kindergartener have homework?

There will be homework Monday-Thursday!  Please pay attention to the notices sent home.  The school will provide all the necessary supplies for work done in class.  However, your teacher will put out a “Wish List” for parents to help provide some of these classroom materials!  You will need your own supplies for home.

How can I get involved in Roscomare Road and my child’s classroom?
The Kindergarten teachers love parent volunteers!  Volunteer activities include helping out in the classroom, being a Room Parent or doing work at home such as preparing materials for class projects.  Each teacher will explain how volunteering in their classroom works at Back-to-School night (if not before).  Back-to-School night is in October and gives parents the opportunity to meet their child’s teachers, learn about the curriculum and state standards, and meet other parents.  Back-to-School night is only for the parents.

How else can contribute my time to help the school?
The Roscomare School Booster Club would also love your help at any time!  The Booster Club meets every month and all parents are welcome.  The first meeting is the second Tuesday of September at 8:15 a.m., and occur the second Tuesday of each month thereafter.  Refreshments will be served and your input is so very welcome!

There are a number of fund-raising activities throughout the year, starting with the Annual Fundraising  Drive in September and ending with the Spring Fair in June.  The funds raised by the Booster Club allow us to have our computer lab and teacher,   P. E. coach, our Art  and  Music programs, many of our teacher’s aides, and much more.  Just a year ago, the school’s library was renovated and expanded, all paid with the funds raised by the Booster Club.

Booster Club has a School Beautification Committee, and this year membership for the committee will be needed more than ever!  There are weekends throughout the year where parents volunteer to plant, paint and just try to make the school look better.  We are very proud of recent   beautification projects such as the painting of the storage units outside of the classrooms, the beautiful mural in the cafeteria area, school garden, and the tile project of student art.

Do the kindergartners interact with the older children?
Although the Kindergartners participate in many school-wide activities such as assemblies and special functions, their schedule is separate from the 1st – 5th Graders.  They eat lunch, have playtime and start school at a different time than the other children.  They feel very secure and cared for throughout their day.

What else do I need to know?
Fridays are “Spirit Day” at Roscomare.  It is a good day for your child to wear his/her    Roscomare Road   t-shirt.  You may purchase t-shirts at Roscoe’s Retail, which is open most mornings and afternoons at the back of the auditorium.

Students, parents and the staff at Roscomare are all committed to making the school environment safe, clean and welcoming.  As a result, we all work hard to maintain high standards both in and out of the classroom.  This school year promises to be a wonderful year for everyone, and we welcome everyone to Roscomare Road Elementary School !
